Towards Optimal Coordination Between Regional Groups: HVDC Supplementary Power Control

With Europe dedicated to limiting climate change and greenhouse gas emissions, large shares of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) are being integrated in the national grids, phasing out conventional generation. The new challenges arising from energy transition will require a better coordination between neighboring system operators maintain security. To this end, paper studies benefit exchanging primary frequency reserves asynchronous areas using Supplementary Power Control (SPC) functionality High-Voltage Direct-Current (HVDC) lines. First, we focus on derivation metrics for AC systems coupled by HVDC interconnectors. We compare two different control schemes converters, which allow unilateral or bilateral exchanges systems. Second, formulate constraints include them unit commitment problem ensure N-1 security criterion. A data-driven approach is proposed represent nadir constraint means cutting hyperplanes. Our results suggest that exchange through can reduce up 10% cost reserve procurement while maintaining secure.
